“The problem has grown to be too much.

It’s far too many people in chat, and at spawn. You cannot go to spawn without someone dropping a named piece of garbage advertising their slot machine. So many small casinos have popped up. Some people join, the first thing they ask is “where can I gamble?” or someone joins and they ask “can I open a casino?” it’s too much. We need to put an end to them all. There are no positives to casino gambling.

This being said, I would like to say that I feel skill based games between friends should go untouched. Private poker clubs, etc. are different in my eyes, it involves a lot more personal connection, higher buy ins, and developing an awareness of the server that isn’t present in a lot of new players. Please, vote aye on this.”

This petition has sparked controversary and deep discussion; Some players like Anthony Org are actively working help make this happen. Explaining that they have a bill for this and is currently in review. Said bill will reportedly ban games of chance while still allowing games of skill, and also preventing DM advertising along with item dropping.

While many players believe this is a good idea, nothing comes without criticism. Some argue that it is unfair for Redmont to ban casinos while they are still selling crate keys in the server shops that cost real money; others say that trial chamber keys should also be considered gambling, since they are based on random chance. Anthony Org has stated that they do not consider trial chamber keys gambling, but can create an exception if needed.

That is not all, there are a couple players who don’t fully agree with either side. For example, one player says that they believe that while the advertising techniques these casinos (and other companies) use should be banned, we shouldn’t ban casinos, as the government can make a lot of money from them (e.g. licensing costs, monthly fees, etc.). But that may not be preferable right now. A recently distributed letter from the Federal Reserve Bank states that the government may want to proceed with caution when trying to earn additional revenue. Money taken from players is money that is not circulating in the economy.

Other players have expressed concerns that simply illegalizing casinos may not be enough, as they might simply move into the wilderness, where there would be no regulations or requirements for them at all. Due to these concerns, they suggest making it a server-wide rule, banning casinos from the entirety of DC.

Another suggestion is to first regulate casinos before moving to full-on banning them, which some have offered as an alternative if staff or the government is unwilling to outright ban them. By regulation, players seem to mean requiring casinos to have a license and display it. But as of right now, no such regulation exists; so there is a petition called “Licensing Casinos” with 20 ayes as of reporting.

Some of you might be thinking: “But we already have rules on gambling.” And while that is true, those rules don’t regulate casinos in any way that affects in-game play. The only other rule currently for gambling is simply on advertising; and even then, there are no rules banning item dropping. As of June 30th, the rules for gambling and casinos are as follows:

You must not advertise player-run gambling in-game or anywhere on our Official and Affiliate platforms.

Participating in, advertising, promoting, or facilitating gambling services is prohibited. (This prohibition does not apply to player-run arcade or casino games conducted exclusively in-game or on Discord and not involving real-world currency or external gambling services.)

While researching, our reporters have found that in 2021, Redmont Congress repealed or rejected multiple acts that involved regulations with casinos and gambling. Including the:

  • Casino Regulations Act (Repealed)
  • Casino Regulations Amendment Act (Rejected)
  • Gambling Companies Amendment Act (Rejected)
  • LDV Congressional Wage Increase Act August 2021(Rejected)

We’ve decided to interview some players about their opinion on the petition to illegalize casinos in the politics channel. Here are their responses:

“I support it.”

-Scassany Contour (requested to be known as Redmont’s Favorite Foxgirl)

“I feel like with advertising gambling being against the rules, the casinos will probably die out anyway tbh.”

-AverageAnnika

“I love it, make the casinos illegal.”

-OwnedBlocks

“I believe it is a good measure, since casinos have flooded a lot of cash into a few wealthy individuals and many have lost a lot of money. But also Redmont Trans+ was largely funded by donated money earned through gambling, so you can argue that was at least one positive of the gambling money.”

-FloofyLunafox (requested to be known as Redmont’s Second Favorite Foxgirl)

We have reached out to evefield and asked her if she could answer some questions regarding the petition. While she has stated that she is willing to answer these questions, she was unable to respond before publication.
